Untitled (Stern)
Untitled (Stern) features five remaining photographs of my grandfather’s family, the rest lost to data failure or physical loss and misplacement. There are gaps within most family’s understanding of their ancestors, which widen due to distance in time. The number of circles removed from each portrait relates to the generational distance between myself and ancestor. The further apart we are generationally, the less is known of their existence. Additionally, this work calls upon the immediate loss of Jewish ancestry following the Second World War. As many can relate, the only record of my ancestors is stored through various public access records, databases, and archives. The rest remains unknown.
